Travel
Places I would go back to, and the specific reason each one is worth the trip — mostly a matter of timing.
I travel by staying somewhere longer, not by fitting seven cities into ten days.
The list is ordered by how much I want to return. Each note is the concrete detail a guidebook leaves out — usually about when to go.
-
Kyoto
2018
Go off-season. Tofuku-ji in late November is shoulder-to-shoulder, but Nanzen-ji at half past six in the morning is nearly empty.
-
Lisbon
2019
The only city where I think the hills make it better. Every climb pays out in a viewpoint a few hundred metres later.
-
Iceland Ring Road
2022
Ten days, clockwise. The real payoff is the Eastfjords, which almost no tour bus reaches.
-
Tainan
2017
Went for the food, stayed for the scale of the old city. Twenty minutes on a bike crosses four hundred years.
-
Scottish Highlands
2023
The weather changes three times an hour. That is the feature, not the bug. Bring waterproof everything.
-
Dali
2021
Stayed three weeks instead of three days. That is the only reason I understood what is good about it.
